Myths About Hair Loss

Hair Loss in Women

The reasons for female hair loss are mostly same as those compared to men. However, the degree of hair loss in women is less than that of men. Women suffer less hair loss due to certain genetic trait different from men and protection from estrogen over a period of time.

Androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss, as opposed to male pattern hair loss, is one of the reasons of hair loss in women. This type of hair loss is also known as hereditary balding. The main reason for this type of hair loss is related to genetics and hormones to some extent. This tendency can be inherited either from father's side or from mother's side.

DHT is also a cause for hair loss in women. DHT is formed when testosterone interacts with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Testosterone when combines with androgen receptors, and when it mixes with sebum dirt it causes an effect that produces a powerful substance called DHT. DHT is the main reason behind the miniaturisation of the hair follicle and hair loss.

Telogen effluvium is another cause for hair loss in women. It is a condition in which the hair goes in a resting phase. Pregnancy is the most common type of resting phase after which female hair loss is thick and fast, and visible.
